Objectives
Program objectives
The Ph.D. programme in Religion is intended to assist students to :
-
Acquire in-depth knowledge in their area of specialization.
-
Acquire additional knowledge outside their areas of specialization in order to develop a multi-disciplinary perspective and a holistic interdisciplinary approach to religious issues.

Conduct independent research and present findings in a coherent and comprehensive manner, with a view of contributing creativity to the enrichment of scholarship in their fields.

Undertake teaching responsibilities and offer administrative and consultancy services to the

organizations and institutions.

Apply their expertise in finding solutions to problems in society.
Duration
Duration of programme
The Ph.D. Programme in Philosophy shall normally take three years of two semesters each.
Course Structure
Structure of the programme
The programme comprises Coursework, Examination and Thesis. The minimum units of coursework shall be 21 and the maximum 24. These consist of at least 12 units at the level
900 courses and the rest from level 800 courses. All courses shall be done during the first year of study for both full and part-time students. Proposal writing, research, data analysis and thesis writing take the rest of the time.
Year 1 Semester I At least 9 units of course work and a minimum of 6 units of research proposal.
Year 1 Semester 2 At least 12 units of course work and a minimum of three units of research proposal.
Year 2 throughout Research only (15 units)
Year 3 throughout Research & thesis (15 units)
A candidate admitted into a Ph.D. programme must submit to the School of Graduate Studies through his/her respective Faculty Graduate Studies Committee a research proposal within the nine months after provisional registration.
If a research proposal is found to be satisfactory, the board, School of Graduate Studies shall recommend to Senate that the candidate be registered. The date of registration shall be backdated to the date of provisional registration.
The School of Graduate Studies may decide to disapprove the research proposal if:
The research is unsuitable in itself, or
The research cannot be scholarly conducted under the supervision of the University.
The conditions under which the candidate proposes to work are unsatisfactory.
Registration for Ph.D. will not be recommended if a candidate fails to submit an acceptable research proposal within the stipulated period. A student who does not qualify for registration at the material time shall normally be discontinued.
A candidate may be registered as a full-time student for Ph.D. Degree for a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years.
Examination of courses shall be according to general University examination regulations.

Admission requirements
To qualify for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme, applicants shall be holders of a Master’s degree in Religion from Moi University or its equivalent from a recognized university.
