MASTERS OF ARTS IN FRENCH

The Department of Linguistics and Foreign Languages offers a Master of Arts degree in Linguistics, Media and Communication by both coursework and research. Broadly, the program is geared toward producing personnel competent in the French language and culture and is intended to ground them in modern research techniques.  Specifically, the program targets students who:
1.    Wish to teach French effectively,
2.    Who wish to pursue further studies in the language.

Course objectives:
1.    The program aims at laying a solid foundation  in linguistic knowledge (description of French language both in its oral and written forms), in the area of teaching of French as a foreign language as well as in the initiation to research in linguistics and literature.
second-class honors degree from Moi University or a university
recognized by the Moi University  Senate. In addition, candidates to the programme must have taken French studies, at undergraduate  level. Applicants with a lower second class honours and three years of field experience may also be considered.

Duration
The programme extends over a period of two academic years for full-time students and is divided into four semesters as follows:

  • First semester: course work and research seminars
  • Second semester: course work and proposal writing
  • Third semester: data collection and analysis; first draft of thesis
  • Fourth semester: course work and completion of thesis writing
Structure of the Program
The courses are offered in units. A course unit will constitute a one-hour lecture per week per semester. The program shall consist of a minimum of forty-six (46) and a maximum of fifty- eight (58) units.
