Eastmond Mwenda, a fourth-year student taking Bachelor of Arts in Film and Media Studies from School of Arts and Social Sciences at Moi University is the winner of Kalasha 2020 Best Student Film Award for his film The Case. A former student Joan Rispa Kiragu won the same in 2017 Edition of the Awards’ Ceremony for her directorial debut Detox.
Kalasha International Film and Television Awards is a fete organized by Kenya Film Commission to celebrate excellence in film and television in the Country. The ceremony went down on Saturday 12th December, 2020 in Nairobi. Eastmond thanked the University for mentorship and training he has received from the institution.
The award is the 7th this year for his filmmaking efforts in the country. It is noted that Eastmond also won Kshs. 250,000 from the President’s 100 Million Covid-19 Stimulus Package Funding for Artists this year to produce a short film on Covid-19 related issues.
The win continues to cement Moi University’s Bachelor of Arts in Film and Media Studies Programme as the best in the country since its inception in 2005. The programme has seen its alumni including Sam Soko, Cyrus Kyalo, Joan Rispa Kiragu among others push the film industry forward in the country and get recognition internationally.
