MASTERS OF ARTS IN PHILOSOPHY

A M.A. inPhilosophy programme is designed to instill a critical and analytical approach and outlook in the student’s perception
for application of the same knowledge for development at local, national and International levels.  The Programme strives to serve the Kenyan Society by meeting the academic and practical development needs and interests of a wide spectrum of people.
Programme Objectives
  1. To enable the students acquire an in-depth understanding of philosophy in order to provide manpower needs in academic and non-academic fields for the development of the society.
  2. To expose the students to various philosophical traditions with a view to promoting independent thought and tolerance in their approach to life.
  3. To assist M.A. graduates to apply their philosophical expertise in finding solutions to problems in their society.
  4. To help the student develop a multidisciplinary perspective and a holistic interdisciplinary approach to issues and ideas.
  5. To equip the student with topical research skills and thus create an analytical mind that can produce knowledge in Philosophy and related disciplines.
  6. To enhance the student’s ability to disseminate knowledge through teaching and publishing.
Admission Requirements
The programme is open to students who satisfy the requirements for School of Arts and Social Sciences M.A. Degree programmes. Candidates must have B.A. or its equivalent in Philosophy with Second Class Upper but those with Second Class Lower with work experience of 2 to 3 years will be acceptable. In addition to the general requirements, candidates with B.A. degree in a relevant field may also apply.

Duration of Programme
The M.A. Programme in Philosophy shall normally take two academic years of two semesters each.

Programme Structure  
The programme shall last four semesters or two years in which candidates will cover a minimum of 46 Units or a maximum of 58 Units.
