Diploma in Social Work

Introduction

The Diploma in Social Work programme provides theoretical and practical knowledge in which students can begin to develop an understanding of social welfare and support. It aims at equipping learners with social work practical skills, attitudes and acumen that can enable them serve humanity, especially in service provision to the needy in society. In addition to providing an analysis of social work practice in contemporary society, the programme develops a reputation for empowering graduates with confidence, flexibility, intellectual curiosity and resourcefulness in social work.

Objectives

a) To offer fundamentals of social work theory and practice

b) To develop practical social work research skills

c) To build upon practical experience of professionals in the field of Social Work and criminal justice and staff of other similar agencies.

d) To equip practising professionals in Social Work with technical skills, knowhow and values appropriate to humanitarian interventions.

Admission requirements

To qualify for admission into the Diploma in Social Work programme, applicants should be in possession of:

i) A mean grade of C- at KCSE or Division III at KCE OR

ii) A mean Grade of D+ at KCSE or its equivalent PLUS a Certificate in relevant discipline of Moi University or any other recognized institution

Programme Duration

The programme runs for four semesters of 16 weeks each and an additional 8 weeks devoted to field attachment/placement.

Course Structure

(i) All students shall take all core and required courses upon entry into the Diploma in Social Work programme. In the third and fourth semesters, they will concentrate on specialization courses which will form core and electives.

(ii) The student will be expected to take a minimum of 72 units or a maximum of 84 units for the duration of the programme.
