Diploma in Religion

DIPLOMA IN RELIGION

This programme is aimed at meeting the academic needs and interests of a wide spectrum of people: teachers of religious education in secondary schools and colleges or those in specialized ministries in religious and other institutions, as well as those in administrative and social works.
The programme covers diverse courses drawn from African, Christian and Islamic religious studies and Theologies. Students concentrate on areas of their own interests according to their own needs and those of their professions.

Objectives/Admission

Objectives
The objectives of the programme are:

  1. The main objective of the programme is to serve specific interests of a wide community in the area of Religion.
  2. Enhance the academic base of teachers in religious education in schools and colleges as well as that of ministers of religion.
  3. Assist students to gain broad knowledge of religions other than their own, with a view to having a basis for sound inter-religious dialogue and understanding in a pluralistic society.
  4. Expose students to the relevance of religion to society today.
  5. Assist professionals to gain knowledge in various subjects in the discipline of religion.
  6. To prepare interested students for degree work.

Admission Requirements

Candidates should possess at least Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with a pass of grade C plain" or Division III in O level or the equivalents as determined by the department. In addition to this, candidates should have at least a pass in English. Graduates of teacher training colleges and other colleges, who in the judgement of the department qualify, may also apply; professionals such as social workers, counsellors, pastors, imams and community leaders are also eligible.

Duration of the programme
The programme will last for one academic year of 3 semesters of 12 weeks each.

 Course Requirements

The programme shall normally consist of at least 36 units of coursework and examination. All 12 units of core courses and 24 units of electives must be passed.
