History

Welcome to the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Moi University.

The School of Arts and Social Sciences was started in 1987 and it was then called the School of Social Cultural & Development Studies following the recognition by the Presidential Working Party on Moi University that Science based programmes required blending with social, development and cultural programmes for optimum results.

Further, as envisioned by the Mackay Commission, the cross fertilization of Science and Arts disciplines has led to a better understanding of humanity with a view to solving some challenges of human experience especially in rural Kenya. The first students for the School were hence admitted in 1989.

Given the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature in which the Bachelor of Arts Programmes are offered, graduates are not only adequately grounded in specific disciplines but they also have a feel of several other humanities and social sciences disciplines. Moi University Bachelor of Arts graduates are practical and field oriented.

Graduates in Arts and Social Sciences therefore find employment opportunities in Public and Private sectors, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs). Most of our graduates have been employed as Administrators, Social Workers, Researchers, Educators (in Secondary Schools, Tertiary Institutions and Universities); Media Specialists, Journalists, Diplomats, Consultants, Accountants, Bankers and Religious Leaders among others.

Moreover, the School has existing linkages and collaborations with other universities around the globe. These include West Virginia University, USA, through which many staff members have acquired PhD Degrees and University of Hamburg, Germany. Recently the School established linkages with Bayreuth University (through the BIGSAS initiative), Germany, and Indiana University-Perdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), USA. There are also linkages with the University of Paris and Universite Lumiere Lyon 2, France; and Bolgona University, Italy, CARTA among others. These linkages are aimed at capacity building through staff exchange and training, student exchange, and joint research. A good number of staff and graduate students have benefited from these linkages.

On the whole, the School has grown over the years both in terms of the Programmes offered and number of students; as well as number of academic and non-teaching staff who facilitate School activities – teaching, research, outreach, student supervision and mentorship and administrative, among others.
