BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH EDUCATION (MATHEMATICS)

 The Bachelor of Arts with Education (Mathematics) degree program offered by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is an integrated degree program that will expose the students the following areas, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Studies. In addition the program will provide graduates not only with a specialized knowledge of the subject areas and pedagogic skills.

Objectives/Admission

Admission Requirements
To  be admitted to Bachelor of Arts  with Education (Mathematics) degree program, a candidate must be a holder of

i) Kenya certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) as approved by the Moi University Senate.  In addition a candidate must meet the following cluster in the KCSE or its equivalent recognized University Senate.

  • Mathematics OR Mathematics
  • Physics Physical Science
  • Second group II Biological Science
  • Third group II or any group II/IV/V Geography/accounts/commerce

For the privately Sponsored Students  Program (PSSP) an applicant must meet the above (i) requirements and have a minimum grade of C+ (plus) in Mathematics.
OR
(ii)   Holder of Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) with two Principals (2P) and one subsidiary (1S) in science subjects  (one principal must be in mathematics.)
OR
(iii) Holder of Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) Diploma in Applied Sciences, Computer Studies, applied Statistics or relevant disciplines or its equivalent from an institution recognized by Moi University Senate (those with credit/Distinction may be admitted to 2nd   Year, Pass in 1st year, HND credit 3rd  year and pass in second year)

For mature entrance applicants, an applicant must meet the above (iii) requirements and must have worked for at least three years.

Objectives
The course aims at developing and producing knowledgeable and well trained Mathematics  or Computer Studies graduates who can teach in secondary schools, middle level colleges and tertiary institutions, and able to work in institutions where mathematics or computer science are applied.

Specific Objectives
At the end of the program the student should be able to:
1.    Demonstrate high level of understanding of Mathematical or Statistical knowledge,
2.    Teach Mathematics studies in tertiary institutions and secondary schools both locally and internationally,
4.    Pursue postgraduate studies in Mathematics or Statistics areas which require such knowledge,
5.    Apply Mathematical or Statistical knowledge in research and work in various fields.

Course Duration
The Bachelor of Arts with Education (Mathematics) degree program shall normally cover a period of four years.
